The Social Science Research Council’s (SSRC) China-Africa Knowledge Project (CAKP), in
collaboration with the SSRC’s African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and the American Friends of
Service Committee (AFSC), is launching a training program for 5 to 6 Chinese advanced PhD
candidates, recently graduated doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows and/or junior faculty interested
in conducting research on China’s engagement with the United Nations in and relating to African
peace and security issues. Field research and research papers undertaken within the Virtual

Union cooperation in peace and security.
Successful candidates must be available to conduct field research in Africa from a minimum of 1
month and up to 3 months over the course of May 1, 2016 to September 1, 2016. Based on the scholars’
research themes, project partners will place the scholars for a minimum of 1 month and up to 3
months with AFSC, APN, CPPF, academic, NGO or multilateral partners in Africa working on
comparable issues.
Candidates will develop their research papers for publication at a fellows workshop to be held in
summer 2016 and hosted by an African partner institution in the region. Successful candidates will
have the opportunity to present their research to senior scholars and UN officials in New York City
and to Chinese research communities in Beijing. Completed papers will be submitted to journals for
publication, or be published as part of a journal special issue.
